Daily Geek Report 02-16-2012

Happy Thursday Everyone.

As soon as March 8th, the FBI could be turning off the internet for millions of people whose computers have been infected with a virus/bot that modifies someones host file on their device so that when someone types in fbi.gov.. It would point them to a fake website vs the real one. The FBI has a court order that allows it to put up replacement DNS servers so the people with infected computers can get the virus off. The court order expires on March 8th and unless that order gets extended, anybody who hasn’t cleaned up their PC might get cut off from the Internet altogether. Awesome.

Apple out of no where it seems decided to drop a bomb of news today. Users have been notified that the new version of OSx Mountain Lion will be available to users by the end of the summer. New features include “Messages” which will replace ichat. iMessage is chat interface that integrates iChat, iMessage, and FaceTime. It will also support AIM and GTalk. The Main OS will have a similar notification drop down menu similar to that on iOS. iCloud will be built in. It appears that Apple is attempting to go after the throat of other big time cloud storage services (DropBox, InSync, Googles new service, as well as Amazons Cloud service). Twitter will be built in finally and there will be a game center.. for those of you really reading this.. Is it just me… or does it seem as though they are trying to close the gap on iOS and OS X?

Lastly for the day, it’s been leaked that the new XBOX coming out is currently code named Durango. I’m sure you were curious and couldn’t wait to know what it was going to be called.
